As many people know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. A staggering number of women and men are affected by this disease each year. The American Cancer Society estimates that breast cancer ould result in 40,480 deaths this year, which will include both women and men. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women next to lung cancer and the number one leading cause of death in women ages 30 to 50. A healthy diet and regular physical activity can help reduce your risk of Breast Cancer. Here are some early detection guidelines from the A.C.S. :
- Annual mammograms are recommended for women in their 40’s and continuing every year for as long as the woman is in good health.
- A clinical breast exam should be part of a periodic health exam about every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s
- Women at high risk should get an MRI and a mammogram every year. Women at moderately increased risk should talk with their health care providers about the benefits and limitations of adding MRI screening to their annual mammogram. Annual mammograms are not recommended for women whose life risk factor is less than 15%
- Although there are no known causes of breast cancer in men, men should take the same preventative measures as women to detect early stages of breast cancer
